Hernando does not try to be a destination. It sits quietly between Inverness and Citrus Springs, wedged along US 41 and CR 486, and most of the time it functions as the practical middle of Citrus County. That is exactly what makes it useful to the people who live here.
This season, the middle is where the interesting things are happening. A restaurant is opening in April that fills a gap the entire county has carried for years. The paved trail that runs through downtown is also the only place in Citrus County where you can safely ride to Crystal River without ever touching a highway. And the farmers market residents drive to on Saturday is not in Inverness or Brooksville. It is a few minutes from home.
The Restaurant That Fills a Countywide Gap
If you have ever tried to order Indian food in Citrus County, you already know how the search ends. It ends with a drive to Ocala or a delivery app that quotes an hour and change.
That changes this spring. Palms of India is set to open April 16, 2026 at 2448 N Heritage Oaks Path, introducing authentic Indian cuisine to Citrus County. Owner Jeffrey Singh has said the reason is straightforward: the area currently has no other Indian food options. The space is compact and dual-purpose. Palms of India will offer a blend of fast-casual convenience and full-service dining in a 42-seat space, with a beer and wine bar that includes specialty bottled beers from India and wines sourced from the Punjab region in northern India, where Singh's father is from.
The menu leans North Indian, with chicken curry, butter chicken, tandoori chicken, chole and bhatura, and garlic naan anchoring the list, and vegetarian options throughout. Hours land where you would expect for a neighborhood restaurant: 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and closed Sundays. If the opening holds to schedule, Heritage Oaks Path will have a new after-work option before the summer heat sets in.
Mile 33.3, and Why It Matters
The Withlacoochee State Trail is easy to take for granted when it runs through your side of town. It should not be. At 47 miles, the Withlacoochee State Trail is one of the longest paved rail-trails in Florida, with generally flat terrain and many access points, making it an ideal venue for all skill and fitness levels of cycling, running, walking and skating.
The Hernando Trailhead sits at mile 33.3, right off CR 486, with parking, restrooms, and picnic tables. What most residents do not use often enough is the connection three miles north. At mile 36 in the town of Hernando, Citrus County's Cross-County Trail intersects, giving safe access to Crystal River. That is the only paved, off-road way to ride from a Hernando driveway to the Crystal River waterfront without merging into traffic on 44 or 486.
Here is how the nearest stretch shakes out for planning a morning ride:
| Mile marker | Location | Why stop |
|---|---|---|
| 28.0 | Wallace Brooks Park, Inverness | Lakefront, restrooms, downtown Inverness a block away |
| 33.3 | Hernando Trailhead (CR 486) | Home base parking, picnic tables |
| 36 | Cross-County Trail junction | Turn west here for Crystal River |
| 38.8 | Holder | Quiet turnaround point |
| 39.7 | Citrus Springs Trailhead | Restrooms, longer-ride refuel |
Distances come from the trail's own mile log documented by FloridaHikes.com and the Withlacoochee State Trail Headquarters. If you have not ridden north of the trailhead in a while, the repaving work FDOT completed in late 2024 through the Inverness area smoothed out several stretches that had been rough for years.
Where Locals Actually Eat
Hernando's food scene has always rewarded people who know which door to walk through. The buildings do not sell themselves. As you drive through Hernando, you might not even notice the next restaurant on our list, but this nondescript white building is the home of some of the best BBQ in Citrus County today. That is Sauced Hogs, and the surprise there is not the barbecue. Their menu is not exclusively BBQ items. In addition to serving up some awesome BBQ plates, you will also find a great Reuben sandwich here, as well as some solid burgers and salads.
Here is a working shortlist for the season, drawn from what neighbors and Citrus Hills residents keep circling back to:
| Place | What it is | When to go |
|---|---|---|
| Sauced Hogs BBQ Bar & Grill | Smoked plates, Reuben, burgers | Weeknight, when you cannot commit to one cuisine |
| Blue Gills Bait Shop & eatery | Fish and old-Florida atmosphere | Late lunch, after a ride |
| La Pergola Italian Argentinian Ristorante | Pasta and grill, distinct menu blend | Anniversary dinner without a drive to Ocala |
| Katch Twenty Two | Seafood, local favorite | Weekend, when you want a table with a view |
| Palms of India (opening April 16) | North Indian, beer and wine | The first Friday after opening night settles down |
For Sunday mornings when Palms of India is closed, the Citrus Hills Farmers Market is the more useful stop. Citrus Hills Farmers Market is located at 240 W. Fenway Dr., Hernando, FL 34442 and has indoor space, which matters more in August than most residents want to admit. It carries USDA Certified organic products alongside the usual mix of produce and small-batch goods.
A Saturday That Uses the Town Well
If a visiting friend gives you one Saturday and does not want a canned tourist itinerary, this is a workable order of operations:
- Coffee at home, then drop the car at the Hernando Trailhead by 8:30 a.m. before the sun climbs.
- Ride north to the Cross-County Trail junction at mile 36, turn around, and roll back for roughly a six-mile out-and-back.
- Detour to Citrus Hills Farmers Market on Fenway Drive for produce, bread, and something to snack on the walk back to the car.
- Late lunch at Blue Gills or Sauced Hogs, depending on whether you want fish or smoke.
- Afternoon on a screened porch. This is Florida. No further justification required.
- Dinner reservation at La Pergola, or, after April 16, at Palms of India.
That routine covers about 30 miles of driving total, three meals, and a workout, without ever leaving the 34442. Try to build that day in Beverly Hills or Homosassa and you are looking at more time in the car than at the table.
Small Things Worth Knowing
A few practical notes that come up often enough to be worth naming:
- The Hernando Trailhead has restrooms, but the Owensboro Trailhead at the far south end of the trail does not, which matters if you drive down for a longer ride starting elsewhere.
- The trail crosses CR 486 with a short one-block detour, then picks the old rail corridor back up, so first-time riders sometimes lose the path there. Stay on the sidewalk for the block and you will find the pavement again.
- The Citrus Hills Farmers Market accepts a mix of payment types, but bring a few small bills for vendor booths that run cash-only stalls on busy Saturdays.
- Palms of India will offer DoorDash and Uber Eats from opening, per the announcement that delivery services including DoorDash and Uber Eats will also be offered.
For neighbors who like a longer ride than the local trailhead loop, the calendar has one date worth marking. The Annual Bike Ride on the Withlacoochee State Trail occurs on the first Sunday in October, sponsored by the Friends of the Withlacoochee State Trail to raise funds for trail improvements, with about 1,000 riders choosing their own distance up to a full century, and both breakfast and lunch at the Inverness Trailhead. The staging is in Inverness, but the ride belongs just as much to the Hernando trailhead crowd, who tend to slide in from the north without fighting for parking.
The Middle of Citrus County, and Why That Is the Point
The pitch is not that Hernando is the loudest town in Citrus County. It is that Hernando is the town where the trails cross, where a countywide food gap is closing this spring, and where a Saturday can be built without touching US 19 or the Suncoast. That is a kind of quiet leverage. Residents already have it. Newer neighbors are still learning to use it.
